Faial, (means "beech wood" in Portuguese) is nicknamed Ilha Azul, the "Blue Island" for the abundance of hydrangeas that grow on the island.  The original name of the island was Ilha da Ventura (Venture Island) and it was discovered by Diogo de Silves, in 1427.  The island was initially settled by Flemish and Portuguese settlers.

Faial é também chamada de "Ilha Azul" pela abundância de hortências que crescem na ilha. O seu nome original era Ilha da Ventura e foi descoberta por Diogo de Silves, em 1427.  A ilha foi colonizada inicialmente por povoadores flamengos e portugueses.
